The 2010 FIFA World Cup was an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of young children living in vulnerable communities, particularly through providing recreational and educational opportunities. Football is a national pasttime in South Africa and many young people got excited about the 2010 FIFA World Cup happening on their doorstep. The legacy this project seeks to imprint is that the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa would be an effective vehicle for social change in vulnerable communities.
In order to reduce crime in South Africa, the youth should be given both hope and real opportunities that create a culture of respect, tolerance and mutual learning.
Youth zones are being established in a number of disadvantaged communities, and will be twinned in cross-cultural learning partnerships. Each youth zone will have a senior football team with all senior players expected to be coaches or volunteers.
Gender equality is imperative throughout this programme and a 50/50 split of boys and girls participation is being pursued.
The youth zones are as follows:
Youth Zone 1: Free State (Phuthaditjaba)
Youth Zone 2: Kwazulu Natal (Umzimkhulu)
Youth Zone 3: Northern Cape (Upington)
Youth Zone 4: Gauteng (Evaton North)
Youth Zone 5: Gauteng (Cosmo City)
Youth Zone 6: Gauteng (Mamelodi)
Youth Zone 7: Mpumalanga (Siyabuswa)
Youth Zone 8: North West (Mogwase)
Youth Zone 9: Eastern Cape (Somerset East)
Youth Zone 10: Western Cape (Somerset West)
Youth Zone 11: Limpopo (Jane Furse)
Youth Zone 12: Mozambique (Manica)
