Electricity Governance

The Electricity Governance Initiative of South Africa is an informal partnership affiliated to the Electricity Governance Initiative, a global project led by the Prayas Energy Group (India) and the World Resources Institute (USA). Current EGI-SA partners are:

Sustainable Energy Africa (SEA)
Green Connection
South African Faith Communities Environmental Institute (SAFCEI)
350.org
Worldwide Fund for Nature, South Africa (WWF-SA)
Project 90 x 2030
Commission for Gender Equality
Idasa

The Electricity Governance Initiative (EGI) is a joint project of the World Resources Institute in Washington and the Prayas Energy Group in India. In co-operation with Idasa, which leads a consortium of South African civil society organisations and research institutes, it is undertaking a research and advocacy project with the aim of improving governance of the electricity sector in South Africa.

The project also aims to:
- build the capacity and credibility of the consortium’s civil society partners in order to enable them to advocate more effectively for integrating especially these public interests in the energy sector;
- build the capacity of policymakers and regulators to practice better governance in order to build political support for innovations to promote clean energy and energy efficiency.

A further, broader, objective is to assist WRI to prepare an initial analysis of the implications for public interests, including sustainable energy options and social equity, of ongoing efforts to integrate electricity markets in Southern Africa. This analysis will focus on identifying levers for positive change through existing regional processes and institutions.

Clean Energy Regulators Forum proceedings are published at  - http://electricitygovernance.wri.org

The EGI-SA participated closely in the public consultation process to develop South Africa’s first public Integrated Resources Plan for Electricity. This plan is South Africa’s framework for electricity security for the next 20 years, but will be reviewed in 2012 to take account of a dynamic energy and climate change context.  Find out more at an online resource for the Integrated Resource Plan 2010 at http://irp2.wordpress.com/
